The “MAA Agent of the Year 2019” is Iain Taggart from Scotland.
Iain’s comments of receiving the Award-
“I’m extremely humbled to be awarded the The MAA UK & Ireland Agent of the Year 2019. It’s been a whirlwind 6 years since taking the step to become self employed and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d like to dedicate this award to my father in law Bruce Nelson, who sadly passed away this year. Without his help, support & guidance, the journey into the world of becoming a Sales Agent would have certainly been far more challenging. I previously worked for Rolls-Royce in Glasgow for 13 years. At the end of 2013 I decided that I would like a new challenge. My father-in-law Bruce was a Sales Agent – I didn’t really fully understand what this was, but I liked the sound of it. So during the Christmas & New Year period of 2013 I approached him and proposed that we work together. I knew that he had intended to retire in the near future so thought that this would be good timing for us both and stepped out into the big bad world of being self-employed! I was both excited and terrified in equal measures! I’ll always remember my first ever day of visiting Wholesalers & even picked up some orders on the day! At the end of that first year I was delighted to find that all of Bruce’s Principals were happy to move over to myself (Cyrus Agencies). Over the last 6 years I’ve had the privilege to work with some fantastic Principals and great people. Today I’m very fortunate to represent market leading brands such as Rointe (Electric Heating), Contactum (Circuit Protection & Wiring Accessories), Crompton Lamps (Lamps & Lighting) and Kewtech (Test Instruments). As a Sales Agent, I’ve found that managing the “balance” seems to be the key – things such as; How many Principals should I represent? How many different products do I offer? What do I do when a new Principal contacts me looking to representation? How many customers can I offer a good level of service to? How to split your time between office days, keeping up with emails, making sure you get back to customers promptly, visiting your existing customers and at the same time trying to build relationship with potential new customers, keeping your Principals up-to-date with what’s happening in there market place, making sure customers are receiving promotions & special offers, following up quote & enquiries, building and maintaining relationships with your fellow agents, keeping your financial accounts up-to-date etc. etc. In addition to the above, covering Scotland and Northern Ireland involves a fair bit of travel and at times that means staying away from home – so the most important balance for me is business and home life – managing a business and at the same time making sure that I spend time with my wife and two children. I’m very fortunate that my wife is extremely supportive and understands that there are times where I’ll be away for days or even a full week at a time. Finally I would like to say a huge thank you to my fellow Agents throughout the UK! Being out on the road can be lonely, so having them on the other end of the phone, either for advice or just a quick catch up can make all the difference.”
